The Grieving of Michael Jackson a true “empath”
The world seems to be divided on their reflections of Michael Jackson. There are those who are grieving deeply the loss of an icon, a Good Samaritan, a wonderful father and a genuinely good human being. There are others who view him as a sad and lost figure.
Regardless of which view one takes everyone can agree that Michael Jackson was an individual with an exceptional amount of talent. Michael Jackson was a sensitive human being. He had an excess of empathy. Empathy is the ability to put oneself into the shoes of another human being. By definition it is the identification with an understanding of another's situation, feelings, and motives.
I contend that empathy is both a gift and a curse. There are those who are beginning to recognize excessively sensitive individuals as empaths. For years individuals with strong empathy have been misunderstood. It is only recently that studies are being conducted to understand this personality type. Such as ability of empathy goes against the nature of many as it implies a level of intimacy that many people put a great deal of effort into resisting. For empaths, this is not an option. I will confess that there is also the reverse prejudice as well. It is often difficult to understand and accept those who reject emotional connections when it seems very natural to those of us who possess the ability.
Empathy is a needed skill to be able to connect with others. However, have empathetic tendencies in excess can be overwhelming. I believe that Michael Jackson’s gift of empathy was at the core of his strengths and his weaknesses directly leading to his amazing abilities.
Michael knew he was different. People knew he was different. They adored him but they also ridiculed him in their own discomfort and perhaps envious state. This haunted Michael. He wanted to be understood and accepted. Empathy can be present on many levels. It can be absent or it can be present in the extreme. Michael it seemed was on the high end of the continuum. That did not mean he understood it or was even aware of what it was that gave him such strong emotions. Music was his conduit. His artistry was his outlet. Michael believed that he could heal people through his music. Perhaps he unknowingly tried to heal himself of the gift-curse that he possessed through his music. This too was a double edged sword. He would receive acclaims for his originality but he was also criticized for his uniqueness.
Understanding empaths
As stated, empaths are extremely compassionate human beings. However, they are often also over-whelmed by their emotions, headaches, mood swings, confusion, isolation, fear, worry and constant anxiety. This does not mean that a sense of peace must remain elusive. It takes reflection and understanding with understanding being the key to acceptance. One individual described it as having a tattoo on their forehead that led people to know they could share their feelings knowing that he would listen, understand and feel their pain. This individual developed panic disorder and agoraphobia in his quest to deal with the intensity of the pain he felt. This individual sought help due to having a child who was experiencing a similar inner turmoil. He found validation and a support system.
The misunderstanding of empathy its strength and how it impacts the individual possessing it is what has led to the ridicule and ostracizing of people like Michael Jackson. Mixed with the emotions of adolescence being an empath can cause extreme mood swings and lack of ability to concentrate on their studies.
How to cope with being an empath
Understanding that good feelings cannot exist without bad feelings and knowing that even negative feelings serve a purpose can help empaths to shrug off those who do not or perhaps cannot understand empathy, especially in its extreme. They may respond with malice. One may find comfort in joy and laughter with friends who may or may not understand but accept that there are spaces where we are all different and find satisfaction in such notions.Awareness is necessary to begin implementing change and being purposeful focus with one’s talent. Education can minimally be a component toward acceptance. Accept that empathy is like a hammer. It is a tool. It can be used for good or for bad depending on its use and the person using it.
Last words to Michael
Michael you spent your life trying to get people to understand what cannot be understood by the masses. We all live, we love, we try hard, we make mistakes, we learn. Some will have compassion and adore you for your talents and for what you stood for. Some will take a view of ridicule or ostracize and believe only the negative. Some will forgive. Others will retain their views. Some will wish to understand but cannot. Others will not understand and do not wish to understand. None-the-less, ALL will find themselves listening to your music and appreciating your talent and your message.
So, Michael Jackson, you lived, you have served, you achieved, you failed, you persevered and, finally, you became tired. Now it is your time to rest. Your legacy will live on, it will love on. Now let go and let God. Go fly with the angels.
Personal note
I would like to share that I began writing this blog and it took on a life of its own. I found a place of understanding in my research while composing this blog. Prior to this blog, I had no prior knowledge such individuals existed known as empaths. I have often stated that empathy is a gift and it is also a curse. I have long lived with its consequences, both good and bad. I doubt that Michael Jackson ever concretely understood this element about himself either. I began this blog trying to speak with an objective voice. However, as I found myself in the spaces of the words, I am certain that I failed miserably in that quest.
Michael, I hope that wherever you are now you have found a place of peace that seemed to elude you here on earth.
